What is truth, and what is the path to salvation? Over the centuries, Christian churches in particular have developed rigid dogmas here, and they have defended these against false doctrines– frequently by violence. As a result, the history of heresy is usually a story of failed ideas and inquisition-like tyranny, but sometimes, as in the case of Martin Luther, it is also the story of a triumph of new ideas.
The exhibition »Heretics! Burning For Truth« – the first on this theme – illuminates the background to the confrontations taking place about ›pure doctrine‹, yet it also illustrates the way that accusations of ›heresy‹ continue even today to be an effective weapon when combating people who go against the grain in the fields of politics, academia, science and society. Finally, the exhibition also attempts to address the question of who these people were that put their concept of the truth above all else – even their own lives.
